Rafael Luciani is a Venezuelan theologian with over 25 years of global academic experience. He serves as an expert for the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) and is a senior member of its Board of Directors. He is a full professor at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST-SCU) and a guest at other universities in Latin America and Europe. He is also a member of the Theological Team of the Latin American Religious Confederation (CLAR) and an expert for the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on synodality.
The Synod on Synodality challenges the Church to move beyond “merely consultative” lay participation toward shared discernment, where authority must listen, give reasons, and build an “ecclesial we” in its decisions.

Global Catholic is proud to be independent—editorially, politically, ideologically and financially.
But independence comes at a cost. Without patron support, we depend entirely on readers and friends like you.
To sustain and grow Global Catholic, we need to raise US$250,000.
